MOTORCYCLE MAMA: 4 Top Fall Fashion Items You MUST Have

By Arden Edelcup

“Beauty to Me is about being comfortable in your own skin. That, or a Kick-Ass Red Lipstick”  — Gwyneth Paltrow

It seems like only yesterday that we greeted the warm weather with a leisurely pair of flip-flops and comfy tank top and headed out for a relaxing day in the sun. Well, the kiddies are back in school, some are off to college, and we are left dazed and confused at the lightning speed that summer fades into fall.

Within the proverbial blink of an eye, this month’s blogs and magazine covers are splashed with glossy models enveloped in emerald-colored leather jackets and seductive dark pouty lips that playfully whisper into our ears:

Yes, you are ALL invited to join the hip and edgy 2013 Fall Fashion Party.

From Vogue to The Huffington Post, they are beckoning us to say our reluctant goodbyes to those trusty and reliable summer friends (cut-offs, suntan lotions and shimmery pink lipglosses), and embrace the new leather-clad chick who is driving into town and challenges you to unleash your Inner Fashion Bad Girl.  So hop on and join me on the wild ride into this season’s most wearable and sexy fashion and beauty trends.

1. Leather Motorcycle Jackets (aka Moto-Inspired) — are without a doubt the absolute must-have item of the season. Every single magazine, web blogger and fashion expert has universally gushed about the rugged sexiness of this trend (think Rizzo in Grease) and the versatility of this wardrobe staple. For those of you who already have a black leather jacket, this season is all about colored leather.  If you want some decadent fun, an emerald green leather jacket can really jazz up any of your fall basics. Pair it with your favorite jeans or over a summer maxi dress.  For the frugal fashionista, “pleather” can create the same vibe for a fraction of the cost.  I have found super soft “faux” leather jackets at stores like Forever 21 for under $25.

Sexy Style Tip #1- Toss on a silk teddy, a pair of heels and your rugged leather moto jacket and unleash your inner Biker Babe for your special someone. You can ramp up the scenario by adding a sexy sheen to your legs with a scented shimmery body lotion (my all-time fave is Mario Badescu Shimmer Body Lotion for a mere $12).  Just a thought …

2.  Black Leather Skinnies – While you may be at risk of morphing into a Hell’s Angel Biker Bitch if you pair it with your Moto-Jacket, black leather leggings are being touted as the 2013 “wardrobe essential” that can be effortlessly paired with everything from a turtleneck, large Jackie-O inspired glasses and velvet colored loafers (another much lauded fashion statement of the season) to sexy kitten heels and silky blouse. This is a look that can easily become a practical staple that can carry you from day to night.  Pair it with a colored pea-coat for a pop of color or mix textures like a chunky black sweater. There is absolutely no misses with this look — which is why I love it.

If you are feeling really daring, try these skinnies with another hot fall trend the provocative “Thigh-high boot”. Once considered a trashy look worn strictly by women turning tricks (didn’t Julia Roberts wear them in “Pretty Woman” when she shopped on Rodeo Drive?), this over-the-knee boot first appeared on the fashion scene last year and was hailed as the sexiest footwear of the season.

Now if you really want to prove your fashion savvy status this season, I challenge you to try the Deep Berry lip shade that glossed up the lips of every runway model during New York Fashion Week. Before you shout that you are blindly devoted to your sheer nude lipgloss, rest asssured there IS a perfect berry for you. Diane Steinmetz, the beauty guru at Ross Cosmetics said that anyone can wear this shade.

Stick to these “Basic Berry Rules”:  raspberry complements fair skin, cranberry for medium skin and blackberry for dark complexions.

3. Menswear-Inspired Looks – If you adored Diane Keaton’s “quirky masculine” fashion sense in Annie Hall — then this trend is calling out your name. This manly-but-chic look was seen in various collections from Calvin Klein to edgy emerging designers.

The Annie Hall Trouser has beauty bloggers coining a new fashion phrase “Man-tastic”.

For those of you who like to take risks with fashion, try these high-waisted wide-legged pants. Following this theme, classic masculine patterns like houndstooth and tweed have been showing up on boyfriend blazers, scarves and handbags. If you want to dabble in this “handsome” style trend without checking your femininity at the door, try the re-vamped classic — The Oxford Shoe.  This shoe has also emerged in various incarnations this year, from metallics to velvets. This revamped shoe promises to give this tomboyish staple an instant cool vibe. Pair any of these testosterone-infused statement pieces with a flirty skirt and “dirty nude” nail polish (try CND Vinylux Impossibly Plush) to complete your fall fashion look.

Sexy Style Tip #2 — Remember Kim Basinger in 9 ½ Weeks wearing nothing but her man’s tailored white shirt and tie while disrobing to the sultry Joe Cocker song “You Can Leave Your Hat On” — well then, perhaps you might enjoy raiding your man’s closet for a private fall fashion show of this year’s hottest fashion trend.

4. GREEN  is the New Black.  Pantone named Emerald Green its top color of 2013 and since then green is the most popular color on the rainbow. If you are looking to add a pop of color to your fall wardrobe then treat yourself to a new tote bag in this majestic hue and consider yourself a savvy insider on the cutting edge of fashion for this season. For a less dramatic color statement, try out a chunky statement necklace with shots of sparkling emerald-colored stones. These necklaces are being touted as the total “outfit” maker that can effortlessly transform the most basic black sweater into a conversation starter. You can easily embrace this “green scene” with your nails too. Dark Green Nails makes a cool statement and fashionistas are claiming that it is this season’s “new neutral”. Deeper shades like forest and hunter ( try OPI’s rich forest colored Here Today.. Aragon Tomorrow) look great on everyone while khaki and olive flatter medium and dark complexions. If you want to create an edgy vibe, try this seasons go-to metallic, (Essie’s For the Twill of It).

While we all love the embrace of the newest fashion, it’s hard to realize exactly when it is time to say “goodbye” to that trend that died several seasons ago. Well, let me formally announce that the fashion gurus have weighed in on the trends from “seasons past” and have declared that Ripped Jeans are STILL a “Glamour DO”. So while fashion trends may breeze into town like a new BFF, it is still those perfectly torn-at-the-knee faded jeans that promises to be there for you through thick and thin. Pair them with your tweed boyfriend blazer, emerald green handbag and silver loafers and strut your sexy ass down the street to the trendiest restaurant in town!  Don’t forget the berry lipgloss too!
